Hey Sandy,

We didn't record it because it was 90% in breakout rooms and we don't usually record those. Maybe we can persuade Mike to run it again some time soon.

Mike's list of beliefs about online learning look fascinating. Is there a recording of the session? Or a longer write-up of it somewhere to get a bit more of the context? Definitely lots of food for thought there.

[…] So with all that as a backstory I will be giving this session this coming Sunday through The ELT Workshop. Here is a teaser from the abstract, “‘Online classes must be synchronous’ and ‘Students must show their faces at all times during online classes.’ These are just two of the beliefs circulating (perhaps uncritically) in the current discourse in ELT worldwide about online teaching.” And here is a link with more more info on the session.
Hey Tim! Just watched the session on conversation, thanks for sharing the recording! I totally agree with explicitly teaching these micro-skills, like back channeling, turn-taking, changing topic, etc. I liked Jedrek’s comment that your approach is more scientific! Very rich! Sure, some elements can be transferred from L1, or acquired by getting repeated exposure eg watching series but I would definitely argue it’s a lot faster to teach them in class/ train learners to master them. Love Thornbury’s Conversation book, it also helped me understand how to teach conversation properly. Cheers for sharing!
